👩‍⚕️Code Blue: Austin Hospital Nurses went on Strike

Nursing shortages have reached a critical point nationwide, with a significant number of nurses leaving their jobs and many more planning to do so in the coming years. Recently nurses from Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin went on strike on June 27, 2023 due to critical nurse - patient ratio and stalled union contract negotiations after 72% of nurses voted to unionize last year.

Texas is a “right-to-work” state, meaning that under the Texas Labor Code, a person cannot be denied employment because of membership or non-membership in a labor union or other labor organization. A lot of grievances by the nurses in the picket line, to mitigate the loss of workforce, hospital management claimed that they hired temporary contract nurses for 4 days to take care of the patients and informed nurses on the picket line that they are locked out for 3 days.

Everytime there is a strike, a group of nurses are mobilized to fill the gap with of course premium pay, they are called “Strike Nurse”.One particular nurse went viral in Tiktok after posting a 35 second clip about her participation on the assignment. She was criticized for it with mixed comments. Some of the comments read, "Whose side are you on?" What would you do? Will you participate in this kind of gig and how do you respond to your bashers?

Two different organizations, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (Jecfa), arrived at contrasting conclusions regarding the safety of aspartame. IARC classified aspartame as a possible carcinogen, citing limited evidence of its link to hepatocellular carcinoma, a type of liver cancer, based on human studies, rodent experiments, and laboratory research.

On the other hand, Jecfa found no compelling evidence of health risks associated with aspartame. Their conclusion was based on comprehensive evaluations of animal and human studies, as well as the fact that aspartame breaks down into molecules similar to those found in common foods. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) cancer concerns surrounding aspartame partly arise from a series of studies conducted by Italian researchers in the late 2000s, focusing on lab rats.

These studies indicated a potential increased risk of certain blood-related cancers such as leukemias and lymphomas, as well as other types of cancer. However, the findings of these studies were subject to limitations that complicated the interpretation of their results. Do you think aspartame is safe?

🎵 TikTok Plastic Surgeon barred from Practicing Medicine

On Wednesday, Dr. Katharine Roxanne Grawe, an Ohio-based plastic surgeon, was stripped of her medical license following an investigation by the State Medical Board of Ohio. The probe was sparked by reports of her alleged broadcasting surgical procedures on TikTok, and complications experienced by her patients.

The Medical Board of Ohio, in a Wednesday hearing, decided to permanently rescind Dr. Grawe's medical license and levy a fine of $4,500 against her. Reports say, this was a consequence of her inability to adhere to the standard of care expected from a medical practitioner.

The medical boards pointed out that Dr. Grawe, popularly known as "Dr. Roxy" on the web, had previously been warned about the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality on social media platforms.
